Wonder Woman And Toxic Generosity
I love being generous for selfish reasons. There is a warm feeling in your heart when you can make someone else happy, with either gifts or the items they need. Seeing my friends and family in pain can be hard, and goodness knows this year has been tough enough as it is. We all want something better than what we have now.
My flaw is I want to give too much. It’s my way of coping with the world, how cruel things are. My belief is that kindness never hurts. Yet sometimes people don’t need what you can give, and they worry about the toll it takes on you. (Can I say my friends are cool for being so considerate? Because you are all really cool.)
Wonder Woman 1984 is about what happens when you are brimming with toxic generosity. Either when you give something that has a high cost of moral hazard or when you cannot afford the item in question. It also means that the villain doesn’t realize he’s evil until late in the movie when seeing the price of his godlike generosity play out with violence and death.
I admit the movie was not perfect. You can tell that the editing needed some work for pacing reasons and that some of the beats made Diana less sympathetic than intended. Even so, I enjoyed watching. I love Pedro Pascal, and the message resonated with me. You can give too much of yourself, or the resources you don’t have, and there is a price…
