When I was at the 2024 Glasgow Awards, I took time to attend the first day of the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) business meeting, a four-day event that invites motions and actions of change. This business meeting, which takes place at every WorldCon, helps with addressing issues from the previous year’s convention and how to plan for the future. One can watch the replay here.

The preliminary meeting is the most important one because it allows room for debate and discusses the agenda items that the weekend will cover. It also helps in clarifying different perspectives on motions like meeting time and accessibility.

Other attendees and WorldCon participants have more details about the specific motions, and I attended the first day; Jason Sanford includes some important notes in his August 2024 writeup. My perspective comes as an outsider that crossed the bridge from the SEC in Glasgow to the Village Hotel, arriving with hot chocolate and feeling blown around by the wind. Some members who had arrived with motions and plans of action invited me to sit with them, and I am grateful for that.

Why Did I Attend?
