The Modern-Day Princesses

They may not have swords, dragons, or magic, but 26 different girls show a different kind of power in the book Pragmatic Princess. In verse, every girl has a name that starts with the letter of the alphabet and a unique personality. Ava starts with her desire to travel, and Zoe closes the book with her tryouts at the circus. In between, their friends and acquaintances share their own adventures.

Rachel Kowert received her Ph.D. in psychology and focuses on helping young girls learn to find their way in the world. Pragmatic Princess came out because she was unable to find the book that she wanted to share with her daughters and other children around the world, to empower girls by telling them they are amazing and can become self-sufficient. Rachel sat down with me for an interview. (Her website is at https://www.rkowert.com/ if you want to learn more about her books and work.)

1) Pragmatic Princess is a collection of stories about girls who find their place in the world, no matter their origins or capabilities. Your goal was to provide role models for girls who went beyond
