Dealing With More Rose Petals: Steven Universe Future, Part Three

Steven Universe is a story about a boy having to pay for his mother’s mistakes. We talked about where Steven made his mistakes and faced the longterm consequences of his actions. In addition, we saw him confronting both the foes that ensued, as well as the baggage. He even called out an illusion version of Rose, asking if she just made him to escape her problems. We know it wasn’t a lie that she reassured him that Steven wasn’t used to help her run away.

We’ve seen the full arc of Rose, showing how she matured from a spoiled Gem into an introspective leader. Steven made peace with the kind of person that she was after learning why she ran away and she lied to everyone. And yet, Steven still has to pay for his mother’s actions. He’s frustrated that the baggage isn’t over. So is the audience. We want to know one way or the other how we should feel about Rose. Now the answer has become muddied, just before the finale.
