Dealing With More Rose Petals: Steven Universe Future, Part One
Rebecca Sugar lied to us, and I love it. Her debut show was supposed to be a trippy slice of life comedy with a goofy teenager. Instead, we got a coming-of-age that talks about war, genocide, and casual oppression with more LGBTQ representation than we have ever seen.
Steven Universe Future is a continuation of Steven Universe, a show about a boy who is half-Gem and half-human and the son of a war heroine. Steven is now 16 and remarkably introspective about trauma and PTSD while not having healthy coping mechanisms. It is also entering its last month of airing.
I wish we had more time, such as another year. Rebecca has made her choice, however, and maybe she’s right. Maybe by this point, the story would have gone the way of Spongebob or The Simpsons. (No, it wouldn’t have.)
SPOILERS beyond this point, so be warned. You also need to be current on Steven Universe.
Two Years Later
Steven, Earth, and Homeworld have grown quite a bit since we last saw our title…
