Amphibia Recap: Episode 20

And we have reached the finale of Amphibia! It has been quite a ride. We’ve seen giant butterflies trying to eat frogs, tomatoes doing the same, and political conspiracies. Despite all the death in this world, implied or otherwise, change is coming, and cycles will break. We see what happens when we sever ties with people who bring us down.

“Changing character” is the theme of this first season finale. While in the previous episode the show discussed that people never really grow out of their flaws, here we see that Anne has changed for the better while Sasha has changed for the worse. When they reunite, we see necessary destruction and sacrifice of the past.

Reunion

We get a flashback that reveals Sasha pressured Anne into shoplifting the music box on Anne’s birthday, refusing to let her “best friend” go home to attend a party the Boonchuys were throwing. In the present, Sasha and Grime invite everyone in Wartwood to a celebratory banquet, and Sprig notes it’s weird to bring an army to extend an invitation. While Sasha treats Anne to the spa life, she reveals the banquet is a trap to make an example of Hop Pop, who’s election campaign has inspired rebellion. Anne refuses to let her honorary frog grandfather get executed and tries to rescue all of the Wartwood…
