This article isn’t going to be about the one-year pandemic necessarily. I’ve talked about my thoughts on work going remote on my personal website. With that said, Broadway has opened. So has the West End. They may be showing off new shows, perhaps established ones. Even so, there is a sense that things will not be the same. You can reduce seating and order people six feet apart, and ensure that everyone wears masks and does not eat in the theater.
It’s hard to measure the loss for the people who had to hang up usher uniforms, cancel auditions, or…
2021 really had to hurt us this year. I know that death comes for everyone, but while we are still at home it feels unfair to lose more good people. When an author doesn’t break their pedestal and proves that they can be decent human beings, you want to hold onto them forever. You want them to live.
Beverly Cleary was 104. She wrote a wide array of books, mostly for kids. Many people have said that having her around for 104 years and not breaking her pedestal was a remarkable achievement. Even so, it hurts when the news broke…
Fandom novels are gradually growing as a subgenre within YA and NA. I like them because they reflect a world in which I grew and matured, finding my friends. Even so, it can be hard to find a book that resonates with your experience and doesn’t mock fans. (Yes, I still have a long memory of certain YA novels that make it feel like the authors hate fandom.)
Zoe Rosenthal Is Not Lawful Good acknowledges that it is hard to explain fandom to an outsider. It doesn’t help that fanfic is sometimes sold illegally en masse, and some fans can…
“Every time I look at you, I don’t understand. Why’d you let the things you did get so out of hand?”
I would hear these lyrics on the albums that we had collected, CDs which we would play in the car or on stereos. My naive self assumed that it was an opening number for a play about the Crucifixion and the consequences for trying to keep the peace. Actually, no, it’s a finale for a musical where it ends in a great death, and a question about why the Crucifixion had to happen, what purpose did it serve.
I’ve…
I wasn’t ready for the end of Ducktales. Neither were a lot of people according to what I saw on social media. While I do feel that sometimes a show has run its course and that ending it complies with the creator’s wishes, this is not the case. The adventures aren’t over for the characters in-show, but we won’t be watching them for a while.
Of course, Disney has done this before. They forcibly cancelled Wander Over Yonder and didn’t let fans know until the middle of season 2 had passed. Coincidentally, Frank Aragones also worked on that show and…
Tarot stories are fun because they talk about how the cards don’t determine your fate. Instead, they can help you make better decisions about your present. When you toss in real magic into the mix along with research, then you get quite a story.
This story also takes a long hard look at what forgiveness is. It also determines that no one is obligated to forgive you for doing something horrible. That was a super refreshing theme to read, in the wake of the whole “hatred is the cup of poison that only you drink” saying that seems to be…
Note: I meant to post this before doing my recap on the season finale, oops! My apologies for that.
We are approaching the last breather episode before the first season finale. Fittingly, it’s a sports movie parody with a reality check. Luz learns that sometimes you can overstep your bounds when protecting a friend. Meanwhile, Amity stands up for her real companions in a time of need. “Sticking to your principles” is the theme for this episode. Sometimes being honorable is a bad idea, as we see when Eda decides to compete with Lilith in exchange for the latter leaving…
I remember when this episode aired. The fandom was screaming, partly in as much agony as Eda does when her curse gets worse. It’s typical that the first part of a season finale drives a stake right through the heart, to turn you into dust. We know it’s so that our excitement ramps up for part two. The Owl House takes note from its animated predecessors on setting up one heck of a cliffhanger.
“Going too far with your actions” is the driving theme of this episode. Luz gets in over her head as usual when trying to find a…
The first season of Ducktales lay the groundwork for plot and characterization. We found out the big mysteries that were plaguing the Duck family: what happened to the triplets’ mother Della, and why Magica DeSpell was hankering for Scrooge’s dime through Lena. We then see these notes carried on in various episodes, as various plots and subplots are extended. Launchpad’s various solo adventures remain offscreen, though we see that the duck has game with mermaids. He is pretty happy to serve as the sidekick, all things considered.
Season 2 also dives into a little bit of Donald and Della’s history…
The downside of waiting to watch shows rather than catch up is that you never know if people will take interest in your thoughts. I just finished watching Wizards, the most recent installment within Tales of Arcadia. It certainly had an emotional impact, if a bit rushed due to Netflix reducing the number of episodes produced.
Obviously, I would have preferred the twenty episodes that the show was originally going to have. Whoever mandated the decision at Netflix needs to have their pay docked and a stream of polite angry letters from us that wanted more Douxie. …
